A Metaphor for Web Hosting Services

February 8, 2009

As pulished in the Annual Press Newsletter

Let’s start with the obvious one first. Standard web hosting would be any services plan you choose with a web host that offers a few amenities. For example, you want to keep it simple. Your website is just maybe 10 web pages. You want the site to have enough space to grow and you want your bandwidth to with stand the traffic that will be coming in. Also, you want a particular type of software to go with your site. hence the amenity. In the post” What is web hosting?” I likened it to having an apartment or condo with all of the amenities. wood floors, Gym, laundry room, parking, and security. Right? How about we do a comparison?

Apartment: This would be your web space in general. Lets say you have 13,000 square feet. That would be 13BG of space.

Parties: Bandwidth in which traffic or real time visitors go to your web site. Hence, the party in your apartment. that would be at least 5 GB of Data Transfer

Classic range or Convection Oven: That would be the soft ware that allows you to edit your website and update it’s files. Hence the cooking in your apartment. That is a particular utility called a WYSG Editor (What you See is what you get)

Laundry room: its a dirty job but someone has to do it. Sometimes those files get corrupted and you need to clean them out. Would you keep dirty clothes in your house too long? NO. So why would you keep corrupted files on your server?

Chrome no frost refrigerator: Well, Where is all of that wholesome food going to go hmm? Your web host might offer database software like MySQL. this allows you to have your blog and other information stored there incase you need to go back to it. this allows people who visit your site see the information. This is a definite plus because your site might crash and you loose all data. It’s always a good idea to have backup.

What Exactly am I trying to say? In order to figure out what kind of web hosting service to choose, it is important to know what it is. With that knowledge you will better understand how to search for a web host without too much hassle on that front.

In conclusion, Web Hosting can be likened to renting a home or an apartment. The most important thing to do is know what web hosting is and what sort of plan to get. In this case a standard plan.

What Are The Different Types Of Web Hosting Services?

January 25, 2009

Part 2 of What is Web hosting? I was at lunch one fine day having a flatbread sandwich and a small French vanilla coffee. As I was sitting on the stool in the window, I realized that there are so many different types of web hosting services out there on the web. What prompted this thought? I was listening to people order their coffee. One lady says ” May I have a French vanilla latte”. That’s a different coffee. Hmmm. Then A gentleman orders a shot of espresso. That’s when the thought hit me. I know what you are thinking. Stephanie you already know that. Why are you so slow? That’s just it, I do know that there are so many. However, I didn’t go into more detail as to the purpose of these services.

There are so many types out there off the top of my head that I could recall. The types that come to mind are:

  1.  Standard Hosting
  2. Blogging
  3. Dedicated Servers
  4.  Shared Hosting
  5. File or image hosting

In the next post and issue I will break some of these down. I will explain what each service is and why they may work for you. Take a look at a few examples. I would recommend these websites for the simple fact that they are user friendly and do well to help their clients achieve their goals.

Whole Hog Blogs  http://whole-hog-blogs.com/ Tell them Stephanie Fulcher at Annual Press Sent you.

What is Web Hosting?

January 19, 2009

Web Hosting can be compared to renting your apartment. Depending on the place, your landlord would want a particular amount of money for security and first months rent. Right? Right. Now, you have your Apartment your apartment is say, two thousand square feet and state-of-the art appliances and other amenities are provided. Lets say you want a web host that allows you to pay per year and give you 10gb Data storage and 4gb of data transfer. That would be a co-op or a condo with a gym and indoor laundry room. Oh and what about a pool? All you would have to do is pay for the maintenance.

Similarly, A host, lets call it A-Host, has a additional service upgrades. With A-host you would need to get more Data transfer because your web site is getting a lot of traffic. Or, your web site is larger than you thought it was and you needed the space to compensate. What are they? Blog software, CMS (Content Management Software) Directory scripts, etc. What am I saying? These upgrades would help you manage your web site better. You will be able to offer free services with your software and even keep a mailing list going. Take a look at Articles I think could shed some light further on the topic.

Understanding the Method of Making Money Through Web-hosting Service

By: webhostinggeeks

Web hosting can be considered as a subscription oriented business. Once a customer subscribes to your hosting service, you will then earn constant money, on a monthly basis and that too with no additional investment from your side. If you don’t have the right quantity of money towards a web hosting business, then in that case, you can start a reseller web hosting business for a far lesser price.

Web Design and Why Tutorials Are an Excellent Asset

September 1, 2008

First, we all know that in order to be seen on the internet, we need   to have a website of some kind. That’s why web design is so important. Whether you have a blog, a site made from scratch, or a live journal, someone had to design that. Someone had to invent the wheel. I know what you’re thinking, Stephanie what does that have to do with the title of this post? Well, there are a lot of things. For one, in order for me or you to keep up to date in our skills in design we need references.

What are those references?

Tutorials or books that can help refresh our memories. A well written tutorial can help remind you of what is missing on your site. Perhaps you forgot a tag or you forgot how to use CSS entirely. You could be just plain rusty. What about books? I know for me I sometimes cannot understand how to follow the examples. I find that online especially some tutorial blogs, that they are little more detailed and the examples are easier to follow. Their suggestions are not just rote notations but expressive.

I know what you are saying” Stephanie don’t be silly, all of the information is the same. Okay look, that’s just how my brain works. You see I can have the site on one screen and  follow the examples on another.  I am not saying that books can’t aide us in our designs. I am simply implying that a web design tutorial is an excellent alternative to buying books. Sometimes buying the books can become costly at the time when all you need a tag or a line to remember.

So, what is the point of this post? I found some very useful sites. These sites are truly full of the appropriate information. I have broken them down according to Program Language. These websites have beginner to advanced examples. Why did I want to share? Well I think that everyone can benefit from these sites especially if you are on a tiny budget. So enjoy the tutorials. Below are a few HTML and CSS Tutorials I have found very useful. Prehaps you will too. There are some of these that are directories.
